John Birdsall trained as a teacher then as a photographer. He has a background of working with children with learning disabilities and was the community photographer teaching at Nottingham Community Arts Centre. Subsequently he went freelance and set up John Birdsall Social Issues Photo Library in 1980 which is now the UK’s leading photo library for images depicting social issues. The aim of John’s work is to challenge stereotypical perceptions and to promote awareness of issues such as disability, race and gender. Over the years he has taken half a million photos and his work is recognised nationwide.
