Prayers towards Mecca at Qalqiliya checkpoint

At the Qaliliya checkpoint, the main crossing into Ramalla, an elderly Palestinian man prays towards Mecca on a makeshift ‘cardboard’ style prayer mat (ironically also facing the seperation barrier). The Quran states that prayer should be performed at least 5 times a day at specific times.

Photographer

Nick Grigg has been a freelance photographer for the past 14 years and has worked in Australia, Scotland and London as an editorial photographer shooting mainly portraiture, advertising, and fashion. Previous and current clients include, The Australian Newspaper, FHM, New Woman Magazine, The Scotsman, The Glasgow Herald, The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian and various middle-eastern publications. More recently, Nick has been focussing on documentary photography where his interests lie in social commentary and world issues such as the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

Nick Grigg was previously in the air force and trained and worked as a military photographer. This included working in the special projects department which was responsible for producing advertising and public relations images.
